Project Description

This project constructs a new magnetic silencing facility with a 700 foot non magnetic concrete drive in pier and 280 foot access trestle. The project is located along the north shore of Waipio Peninsula in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Work includes renovation of an existing building 54 for the deperming operations control function and construction of a new rectifier building housing the deperming rectifiers and 11.5kV switchgear. All materials on the pier and trestle were required to be non magnetic. Aggregate for the concrete was non ferrous and brought in from Guam. A new Hawaiian Electric 46kV transmission line and substation was constructed concurrently to meet the power requirements of this project. The design build land side rectifier building was carefully coordinated to the very large and specialized X, Y and Z loop dc rectifiers built by Rapid Power Corporation.

Electrical work includes installation, startup and commissioning of one Square D 11.5kV, 1200A switchgear lineup, one 1000kVA, 11.5kV to 480V pad transformer, one Square D 1200A, 480V main distribution switchboard, one Square D 37.5kVA dry transformer, two Square D 100A, 208V panelboards up to 225A, one 80kW, 480V CAT engine generator with CAT 100A 480V automatic transfer switch. The Rapid Power rectifiers consisted of two 11.5kV interrupter switches, two 5.5MVA, 11.5kV to 575V, 6 pulse dry type transformers, one 200A,650VDC Y loop rectifier, two 6500A, 650VDC X and Z loop rectifiers, associated DC switchgear sections, LRC filtering sections, HVAC cooling capacity, and various copper and fiber optic control and telemetering back to the control building. New underground electrical distribution, communications and control was installed including cabeling, ductbanks, hand holes and manholes.

Lewis Electric self performed and is overall responsible for all project electrical work and coordination with other trades, the prime contractor and subcontractors. Lewis Electric onsite electrical superintendant is Douglas Bjur who managed an electrical crew of up to 10 journeyman electricians, electrical apprentices and technician specialists.
